Am I Breaking Up Scar Tissue? (And Does It Even Matter?)
If I had a dollar for every time someone on my massage table asked, “Are you breaking up my scar tissue right now?” — I could probably buy an entire case of massage balls.
And hey — I used to say it, too. I’d describe my work as “ironing out adhesions” so your muscles could move better. And while that feeling was real, the actual science behind what’s happening? Science Talk about Fascia has shifted since Ive become a therapist 14 years ago.
Let’s talk about it.
Are We Really Breaking Up Scar Tissue?
Short answer: No — not literally. Scar tissue and fascial adhesions aren’t things you can dig through with enough pressure like you’re scraping wallpaper off a wall.
But here’s the cool part: you don’t need to.
The real magic happens not by smashing tissue, but by communicating with it.
Fascia is a Communicator, Not a Brick Wall
Fascia is dynamic. It adapts to your movement (or lack of it). It’s filled with nerves, sensors, and receptors that tell your brain what's going on in your body.
So when you receive deep, intentional work — like Deep Myofascial Release — what you're doing is:
🌀 Rehydrating fascia so layers glide more freely
🌀 Activating mechanoreceptors that calm the nervous system
🌀 Guiding the tissue into better movement patterns
🌀 And yes — helping your body feel safe enough to release what it’s been holding
It’s not about force. It’s about informed pressure, targeted touch, and precision.
So What Am I Actually Doing in a Session?
When I work with clients, I’m using deep pressure with intention — not randomly jamming into tight spots. I’m listening with my hands. I’m giving the fascia a new input. I’m encouraging better tissue glide, hydration, and connection to movement.
This approach is called Deep Myofascial Release — and it’s different from a generic “deep tissue” session. It’s based in science, body awareness, and 14 years of real experience with how the body actually responds to touch.
The Bottom Line?
So no, I’m not “breaking up scar tissue.” But I am helping you move better, feel less pain, and reconnect with your body — and that’s what really matters.
If you’ve got areas that feel stuck, tight, or disconnected — this work is for you.
Book a Recovery Tune-Up or Deep Myofascial Release session and let’s create change that lasts (no scraping required).
