Why I Started Collagen

Let me just say this upfront — I’m not a supplement influencer, scientist, or some walking health guru. I’m just a regular human who wanted my hairline back.

A while back, I noticed my hairline was fading more than I was comfortable with. I legit thought I was on my way to wig territory — not that there’s anything wrong with wigs, but I wasn’t ready for that. So, I started looking into collagen, because I kept hearing it was the thing for hair support.

What I Didn’t Expect…

I signed up for collagen to help with my hair. What I didn’t expect was:

✔ My nails growing crazy fast — and strong
✔ My skin looking and feeling more hydrated (confirmed by my esthetician, not just me in good lighting)
✔ And weirdly enough… improvement in my not-so-pretty toenail situation

Okay… TMI Nail Story Incoming

When I was younger, I had a toenail fall off — twice. It never healed right, and honestly, I didn’t take care of it (I was young, fit… but healthy wasn’t really my thing back then). Over the years, I tried everything — Lotrimin, tea tree oil (which irritated my skin), and a bunch of other stuff. Nothing really worked.

But after being on Vitauthority Collagen consistently? That stubborn nail actually started growing back healthier. Still a work in progress, but way better than it’s been in… forever.

It took maybe 6-7 weeks for me to see any of these changes mind you.  So, with anything, consistency is key.  This is not a quick fix at all.  And if any supplement says it is, I'd definately question them even more!

A Little Science - But I Promise, I'm keeping it simple

Collagen is basically the protein that keeps your skin, hair, nails, and joints looking and feeling good. As we get older (yep, fun aging perks, and things shift after 40), our natural collagen production slows down.

There are different types of collagen, and the one I take — Vitauthority Multi Collagen Protein — contains 5 types, which help in different ways:

The 5 Types of Collagen (Quick Breakdown):

💥 Type I — Hair, skin, nails, bones
💥 Type II — Joints, cartilage
💥 Type III — Skin elasticity, organs
💥 Type V — Hair & tissue health
💥 Type X — Bone & joint health

The idea is, having all 5 types gives you a more well-rounded support system for your body — inside and out.

Every Brand Has Their Own Formula...Here's My Experience

When I first started exploring collagen, I’ll be real — I didn’t know there were so many types, brands, and blends. It felt like walking into a supplement aisle with a blindfold on.

One of the first collagens I tried was Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides — Check it Out Here. Honestly? I picked this one because a friend of mine — probably the healthiest, most FIT AF dude I know — swore by it. And I trusted his opinion. Plus, I liked that it was made with grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine collagen. That definitely felt like a “cleaner” option, and I know a lot of people prefer that.

Quick heads-up:

At the time, I was mainly looking for something to support my bones and tendons, especially with how active I am. So I gave it a shot.

Here’s the thing…
I can’t say for sure if it wasn’t working or maybe I just wasn’t consistent enough, but I didn’t notice the big differences I ended up seeing later with VitaAuthority. My nails didn’t seem to grow much, my skin looked… well, kinda the same, and my hairline? Still stressing me out.

That said, everyone’s body is different, and Vital Proteins is still a super popular, well-respected brand. It just didn’t deliver the same noticeable results for me.

Again — I’m not claiming this is the thing for everyone, but sharing what’s been working for me in case you’re on a similar path trying to untangle the workout recovery puzzle or just need some inspiration to just try something out.

At the end of the day, this is just me sharing what’s been helping in my world. Again, everybody’s body is different. If you’re curious about trying any type of supplement like this, definitely chat with your doctor first. And don’t be afraid to experiment a little — that’s honestly how I’ve figured out what works for me. Trial, error, and paying attention. Your version of 'what works' might look totally different — and that’s okay.  For Example, my husband can't take Magnesium, he runs to the toilet every time!

It's all about Body Awareness

Wanna explore options?I’m no supplement scientist or influencer, just a regular human figuring this stuff out like everyone else. If Vital Proteins sounds like a better fit for you — especially if you care about things like grass-fed sourcing — here’s where you can check it out:

How I Actually Use This Collagen

The label says you can mix this collagen powder into your coffee, smoothies, or food — and that it has no taste.

I can definitely taste it in coffee & plain water. It’s not horrible, but I notice it.

Here’s what works for me:

🥄 The “Shot” Method — I mix a scoop in warm/hot (not hot) water, down it like a shot of whisky, and done.
🥣 Oatmeal Trick — I toss it into my oatmeal with bananas — can’t taste it at all.
☕ Coffee? — Some people love it in coffee. I’ve tried… meh, I prefer the shot or oatmeal route.

It comes with a scoop, and consistency is key. I’ve been on this one for years now, and it’s been legit for me.

Quick Things To Know List:

✔ Contains all 5 types of collagen
✔ No major taste in food (water? Slight taste, but manageable)
✔ Mixes easily — no clumps when done right
✔ No funky belly issues (huge win for me)
✔ They offer flavored options, but I stick to the unflavored

Final Thoughts - Stay The Course

I’ll say it again — I’m not a supplement pusher, health pro, or scientist. I’m just someone who was watching her hairline creep back, stressing about a stubborn toenail, and honestly, feeling a little “meh” about my skin and nails… until I gave this collagen a real shot.

Here’s what I can tell you from my own experience:

  • Hair growth? Yep — baby hairs popping up along my hairline.

  • Stronger nails? 100% — they grow like weeds and actually feel solid now.

  • Hydrated skin? According to my esthetician? Check.

  • Even my stubborn toenail? It’s making a comeback after years of battling.

But real talk — this didn’t happen overnight. I’m talking a solid 6 to 7 weeks of consistently taking it every single day. It literally says that on the label — and they mean it.

Supplements aren’t some magic shortcut (and honestly, if a brand promises that, I’d question it hard). But when you stay consistent and give your body what it needs, changes can sneak up on you in the best way.

My advice? Stay the course. Pay attention to how you feel. And remember — what worked for me might not be your perfect fit, but that’s how we learn what does.
